As it turns out, the popular image of the first Thanksgiving in America is not that accurate. It's time to dispel some common myths about the origin of our favorite holiday. Are you ready?

Actually, the people who landed on Plymouth Rock referred to themselves as "Saints". In those days, ALL the early colonists were called the pilgrims.

This harvest festival wasn't solemn at all and included gambling, drinking, athletic games and even target shooting.

They didn't actually dress this way. They were just portrayed so by the artists of the 19th century.

They didn't have beef, cheese or milk on the table as well. The Pilgrims ate deer, oysters, Indian corn and berries.

As it turned out, the same feast didn't probably take place next years. The Pilgrims weren't in a right mood for that: the harvest was not that good, and newly arrived Pilgrims caused a lot of troubles.

Actually, the feast was held some time between late September and the middle of October.

I like the thought of Thanksgiving the way we celebrated here in Canada so nice way to end the summer and get all family together an excuse or a large family dinner B

If these are factual, such are for history buffs (those of us who question legit historical assertions and/or claims) who might want to set the annals of mankind corrected/amended assuming further there is such a thing many refer to as 'political correctness.'

Trixie Pettman-South, I'm not sure why we celebrate it in Canada anyways ! More in line would be a day marking the first landing of ships bringing British 'Adventurers' who were the first employees of the HBC fur trading posts; or of the Frenchmen ' Coeur de Bois whom collected the furs. One could equate those men to the American Mountain Men.

I read somewhere that president Abraham Lincoln declared or suggested Thanksgiving to be a national holiday. Is that true ?

Carol Baker, but October is closer to real harvest time and if we had it mid-October, we could do even more Christmas shopping and retailers would not have to rely on December sales only to "make a living".
